  Nathan Erskine is a criminal profiler and behavioral specialist who discovers he is Native American through genetic testing. His friend, Jack enlists his help to trace jewelry with high percentages of cadmium to one of his students.

   That investigation leads Nate to Miriam, a Native American archaeologist who is perplexed about a string of Native American Indian Museum thefts. These are tied into unsolved murder cases and eventually takes them back to the cadmium-laced jewelry.

After a Peace Pipe is discovered next to a brutal murder on a Yavapai-Apache Nation Reservation, the cases of missing ancient Indian artifacts begin to increase which is a clear violation of the Antiquities Act of 1906.

   Miriam and Nate take a trip to ancient cliff dwellings where he demonstrates his drone’s capabilities and where she urges him to embrace his Navajo heritage.

   Nate’s sons, Ben and William, are part of a Navy special operations team that becomes involved when they link the cadmium jewelry to one of their international investigations.

Together, they form an eight-member team called Project NAIL when the thefts become more extensive than anyone realizes. When a priceless ancient Kachina doll is stolen, the team wades through the more than 150 Indian Museums in an attempt to stem the flow of stolen objects, but it comes with a hefty price.

   After embarking on a ‘journey of his soul’ during a purification ceremony, Nate receives the first of several letters from the thieves Project NAIL identifies as the Three Dogs. Jack, Nate, and Miriam are instructed to retrieve artifacts from the City of the Giants before they are sold on the black market.

   Refusing to comply, Nate receives a scathing note from the Three Dogs, and a few weeks later, they each receive mysterious packages containing various items. Miriam doesn’t hold back her opinion when they are told to go to Wounded Knee Memorial in South Dakota during the coldest time of the year. 

In preparation for this encounter, Nate and his twin sons, Ben and William, build drones to use in capturing the thieves, but they hadn’t bargained for a full-blown snow storm, nor being directed to another location to retrieve the artifacts from a Museum nearly 100 miles away.

   Project NAIL invents a procedure to mark objects being sorted in a Utah warehouse; the result of a huge sting operation that netted tens of  thousands of ancient artifacts, some missing from domestic museums for over 40 years. Then the group decides to sell kits to stem the flow of missing pieces.

   Ben and William reveal they are with an organization the Navy calls CounterSpace, which is part of the Office of Planetary Protection and they come together with the Project NAIL members to outwit the Three Dogs. One of them is captured at the Crazy Horse Monument and another at Mesa Verde, where the group discovers there are more members than the three they were aware of, but it’s too late as the thieves make several fatal mistakes.
